Proparacaine Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.5% is a fast-acting, topical local anesthetic for ophthalmic use. It provides corneal anesthesia for short-duration procedures, ensuring patient comfort during various diagnostic and minor surgical applications.

Usage & Dosage
- For Foreign Body/Suture Removal & Tonometry: 1-2 drops per eye before the procedure.
- For Short Corneal & Conjunctival Procedures: 1 drop every 5-10 minutes for up to 5-7 doses.
- Solution Appearance: Should be clear, colorless to faint yellow. Discard if the solution darkens.
Warnings & Precautions
- For Topical Ophthalmic Use Only – Not for injection into the eye.
- Prolonged use is not recommended, as it may lead to permanent corneal opacification and visual loss.
- Use caution in pregnant and nursing women, as its effects are not well-studied in these populations.
- Keep refrigerated (2°C to 8°C / 36°F to 46°F) and protect from light.
Potential Side Effects
- Mild reactions: Temporary stinging, burning, and conjunctival redness.
- Rare but severe reactions: Intense epithelial keratitis, necrotic epithelium sloughing, corneal filaments, and iritis.
- Allergic reactions: Contact dermatitis with drying and fissuring of fingertips has been reported.
