Description

What it is: The TearLab Osmolarity System* is intended to measure the osmolarity of human tears to aid in the diagnosis of dry eye disease in patients suspected of having dry eye disease, in conjunction with other methods of clinical evaluation.


In a prevalence study conducted with over 9000 patients:

  • 61% of overall population with abnormal osmolarity
  • Of those that had abnormal osmolarity, 59% of the patients reported having at least three DED symptoms
  • Average osmolarity of patients with abnormal osmolarity (≥308 mOsm/L) or inter-eye difference (≥8 mOsm/L) = 318 mOsm/L
  • Average osmolarity of patients with normal osmolarity (≤308 mOsm/L) or inter-eye difference (≤8 mOsm/L)  = 297 mOsm/L
