Indications and Usage
Topical anesthesia in ophthalmic practice, including tonometry, removal of foreign bodies and sutures from the cornea, conjunctival scraping, gonioscopy, and prior to surgical procedures such as cataract extraction.
Dosage and Administration
For deep anesthesia (e.g., cataract extraction), instill one drop every 5 to 10 minutes for 5 to 7 doses. For tonometry, suture removal, or foreign body removal, instill one or two drops immediately before the procedure.
Warnings and Precautions
- For topical ophthalmic use only under direct supervision of a healthcare provider; not for patient self-administration
- Prolonged use may produce permanent corneal opacification and loss of vision
- Protect the anesthetized eye from irritating chemicals, foreign bodies, and rubbing
- Use cautiously in patients with allergies, cardiac disease, or hyperthyroidism
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the solution.
Adverse Reactions
Local irritation, stinging, burning, conjunctival redness, and lacrimation may occur; rarely, a severe immediate hyperallergic corneal reaction with epithelial keratitis and sloughing, or allergic contact dermatitis, has been reported.
Storage and Handling
Refrigerate at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F); keep tightly closed and protect from light. Do not use if the solution is more than faintly yellow.
