LipiScan and LipiView II (Johnson and Johnson Vision)

Dedicated meibomian gland imaging and dynamic tear film lipid layer assessment, two focused diagnostic instruments from the same platform family as LipiFlow.

Key points

  • Manufacturer direct through Johnson and Johnson Vision.
  • LipiScan is a dedicated high-definition meibomian gland imager.
  • LipiView II adds tear film lipid layer thickness and blink dynamics.
  • Pairs naturally with LipiFlow for a diagnose-then-treat MGD workflow.

LipiScan, Dynamic Meibomian Imager

LipiScan is a compact, chair-side meibomian gland imager that uses high-resolution transillumination to capture detailed images of the upper and lower lid gland structure. Designed for integration into a high-volume dry eye practice, it produces consistent, shareable meibomian gland images to support patient education, treatment planning, and longitudinal monitoring of gland atrophy or recovery.

  • High-definition infrared transillumination of upper and lower lids
  • Images stored and compared over time to document gland loss progression or treatment-induced improvement
  • Compact desktop footprint, designed for exam lane integration
  • Pairs naturally with LipiFlow treatment as a before-and-after documentation tool

LipiView II, Tear Film Interferometer

LipiView II measures lipid layer thickness (LLT) in real time using interferometry, quantifying how thick the outermost lipid layer of the tear film is across 20 seconds of natural blinking. It also records blink dynamics, capturing partial blink rates that contribute to evaporative dry eye and MGD progression.

  • Measures LLT from 0 to 100 nm with high repeatability
  • Partial blink rate detection, an often-overlooked driver of evaporative dry eye
  • Average LLT and blink report generated automatically
  • Supports pre-treatment documentation and post-LipiFlow outcome tracking

Clinical evidence

  • Blackie et al. (2008), Cornea, Established LipiView interferometry as a reliable measure of lipid layer thickness correlating with meibomian gland expressibility and MGD severity. PubMed
  • Korb & Blackie (2008), Eye & Contact Lens, Demonstrated that partial blink rate detected by LipiView is significantly elevated in MGD patients compared to controls and contributes to lipid layer thinning. PubMed
  • Corneal Physician dry eye diagnostics review (2024), LipiView II and LipiScan highlighted as standard practice tools for lipid layer and meibomian gland assessment in dry eye clinics; considered essential pre-LipiFlow documentation. Corneal Physician
