Rinsada: Irrigating Lid Retractor
A single-use in-office irrigation device that resets the ocular tear film by flushing the full ocular surface, including the palpebral conjunctiva and fornix, to reduce inflammatory load, allergens, and MMP-9.
Key points
- Available on the Dry Eye Rescue wholesale platform.
- Retracts the lid and flushes the full ocular surface and fornices.
- Removes biofilm, debris, allergens, and trapped irritants.
- Featured for biofilm removal and used in cases such as SLK.
What it does
Rinsada is an FDA-cleared single-use sterile device that combines a lid retractor and irrigation system in one instrument. Unlike a standard eyewash that irrigates only the exposed cornea, Rinsada reaches the palpebral conjunctiva and the fornix, the recesses behind the eyelids where inflammatory mediators, allergens, and microparticulate debris accumulate and are not cleared by blinking alone.
The irrigation resets the tear film environment by mechanically flushing away the inflammatory burden before it re-enters the tear film. The result: a lower inflammatory substrate on the ocular surface immediately after the procedure.
Clinical evidence
- ASCRS 2023 clinical data, first human dry eye trial, In dry eye patients (18+), a single Rinsada irrigation statistically reduced MMP-9 levels on the ocular surface and improved patient-reported symptoms at 3 hours post-rinse. Key findings: >70% reduction in MMP-9, >40% of patients converted from MMP-9 positive to negative, reductions superior to a standard eye rinse. Rinsada clinical data FAQ
- Advances in Ophthalmology Practice and Research (2024), Case study in recalcitrant dry eye disease showing Rinsada lavage produced immediate and significant symptomatic relief with marked improvement in corneal staining on slit lamp examination post-procedure. PMC, Advances in Ophthalmology
- Eyes on Eyecare, Rinsada ocular surface restoration (2024), Overview of Rinsada's mechanism and first clinical data, noting its potential as a new therapeutic option for reducing surface inflammatory load in DED. Eyes on Eyecare
How it fits in practice
Rinsada is most commonly used in three scenarios:
- Pre-treatment surface prep, Performed before thermal pulsation, IPL, or lid debridement to reduce the inflammatory burden and improve the surface environment before introducing heat or mechanical contact
- Standalone maintenance treatment, Offered as a 2 to 3 session treatment course (spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart) for symptomatic patients with elevated MMP-9 or high allergen exposure who need a non-pharmacologic surface reset
- Objective inflammation monitoring, When combined with pre- and post-procedure InflammaDry testing, Rinsada provides a visible, documentable MMP-9 reduction that reinforces patient understanding of the treatment's value
