OptiLight by Lumenis

OptiLight is intense pulsed light applied to the skin below the eyes. It is the first and only IPL device FDA-cleared for the management of dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction.

Key points

  • Intense pulsed light (IPL) delivered to the periocular skin below the eyes.
  • First and only IPL device FDA-cleared for management of dry eye due to MGD.
  • Targets periocular inflammation and abnormal blood vessels that feed MGD.
  • Part of the Lumenis vision dry eye line alongside OptiLift and OptiPlus.

What it is

OptiLight delivers calibrated, sculpted pulses of light to the malar and periocular skin using Lumenis optimal pulse technology. It is an in-office treatment, typically given as a short series of sessions, and is often paired with same-visit meibomian gland expression.

How it works

IPL is thought to act on several drivers of meibomian gland dysfunction at once. It can reduce inflammatory mediators around the lids, close the abnormal telangiectatic vessels that feed periocular inflammation, and gently warm the glands, with the aim of improving meibum quality and gland function. Expressing the glands immediately after the light treatment is a common protocol. Lumenis product information.

The evidence and regulatory status

IPL for MGD-related dry eye is supported by randomized and controlled studies, and OptiLight is the first IPL device cleared by the FDA specifically for the management of dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction. As with any device, candidacy and skin-type considerations follow the manufacturer instructions for use. Lumenis; FDA clearance for the MGD indication.

Where it fits

OptiLight suits inflammatory, MGD-driven evaporative dry eye, especially when periocular rosacea or telangiectasia is present. It is usually delivered as a staged series with maintenance sessions, and combines well with gland expression and home lid care.

The Lumenis vision line

Lumenis pairs OptiLight with companion vision devices, OptiLift and OptiPlus. All three are available through Lumenis, and each links to its own page for full specifications and indications.
