Indications and Usage
Indicated for the treatment of bacterial corneal ulcers and bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of designated organisms.
Dosage and Administration
For corneal ulcers, instill two drops every 15 minutes for the first six hours then every 30 minutes for the remainder of day one, hourly on day two, then every 4 hours on days three through fourteen. For conjunctivitis, instill one to two drops every 2 hours while awake for two days, then every 4 hours while awake for the next five days.
Warnings and Precautions
- Not for injection into the eye
- Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with systemic quinolones, sometimes after the first dose; discontinue at first sign of rash or allergic reaction
- A white crystalline precipitate may form in the superficial cornea and does not preclude continued use
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi; avoid contact lens wear during infection
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other component of the medication.
Adverse Reactions
The most common adverse reaction is local burning or discomfort; white crystalline corneal precipitate, lid margin crusting, foreign body sensation, itching, and conjunctival hyperemia may also occur.
Storage and Handling
Store at 2°C to 25°C (36°F to 77°F). Protect from light.
