Indications and Usage
Indicated for the production of mydriasis (pupil dilation).
Dosage and Administration
Instill one drop in each eye every five to ten minutes as needed. To minimize systemic absorption, apply pressure over the nasolacrimal sac for two to three minutes following instillation.
Warnings and Precautions
- Serious cardiovascular events, including ventricular arrhythmias and myocardial infarction, have been associated with phenylephrine
- May cause CNS disturbances; infants and young children are particularly susceptible to CNS and cardiopulmonary effects
- Use with caution in patients with Down syndrome, elevated temperature, or susceptibility to angle-closure glaucoma
- To avoid inducing angle closure, gauge the anterior chamber angle depth before use
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.
Adverse Reactions
Ocular reactions include increased intraocular pressure, burning, photophobia, and blurred vision; systemic reactions include tachycardia, hypertension, and, particularly in children, psychotic reactions, ataxia, hallucinations, and seizures.
Storage and Handling
Store at 8°C to 25°C (46°F to 77°F).
