Indications and Usage
Production of local or regional anesthesia by infiltration techniques and peripheral and central (epidural) nerve block techniques.
Dosage and Administration
Dose varies with the procedure, area to be anesthetized, tissue vascularity, and patient status; use the lowest effective dose. The maximum adult dose is generally 4.5 mg/kg, not to exceed 300 mg; reduce for pediatric, elderly, and debilitated patients.
Warnings and Precautions
- Should be administered only by clinicians trained to manage local anesthetic systemic toxicity
- Risk of methemoglobinemia
- Aspirate before injection to avoid intravascular administration
- Chondrolysis reported with intra-articular infusion (an unapproved use)
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to amide-type local anesthetics.
Adverse Reactions
CNS effects such as dizziness, tremors, and seizures with respiratory depression, and cardiovascular effects including hypotension, bradycardia, and arrhythmias; allergic reactions and methemoglobinemia may also occur.
Storage and Handling
Store at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
