Indications and Usage
A cholinergic (miotic) agent used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma and to manage acute angle-closure glaucoma. Also indicated to prevent postoperative elevated intraocular pressure associated with laser surgery and to induce miosis.
Dosage and Administration
Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) up to four times daily, with frequency adjusted to disease severity and patient response. Punctal occlusion for about two minutes after instillation reduces systemic absorption.
Warnings and Precautions
- Exercise caution in night driving and other hazardous activities in poor illumination
- Retinal detachment has been reported, mainly in patients with pre-existing retinal disease; examine the retina before starting therapy
- Not recommended when active iritis is present
- Remove contact lenses before instillation and wait 10 minutes before reinserting
Contraindications
None.
Adverse Reactions
The most common adverse reactions are headache or browache, accommodative change, eye irritation, eye pain, blurred vision, and visual impairment.
Storage and Handling
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and protect from freezing.
