Indications and Usage
A beta-adrenergic blocking agent indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma.
Dosage and Administration
Instill one drop of 0.25% solution in the affected eye(s) twice daily; if response is inadequate, increase to one drop of 0.5% twice daily. When intraocular pressure is controlled, dosing may often be reduced to one drop once daily.
Warnings and Precautions
- Systemically absorbed; may cause the same cardiac and respiratory adverse reactions as systemic beta-blockers, including bronchospasm and cardiac failure
- May mask signs of hypoglycemia in diabetics and symptoms of hyperthyroidism
- Consider gradual withdrawal before elective major surgery
- Discontinue at the first sign of cardiac failure
Contraindications
Contraindicated in bronchial asthma or history of asthma, severe COPD, sinus bradycardia, second- or third-degree AV block, overt cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, or hypersensitivity to any component.
Adverse Reactions
The most common reactions are burning and stinging on instillation. Less frequent effects include headache, bradycardia, other cardiovascular events, and ocular irritation.
